Sekhar Surya – Youngster with Creative Thoughts
Sekhar Surya, director of FM, is one director to watch out for. He has good potential and it reflected in the film. He worked with Varma Corporation for about 3 years in the direction department. He considers Tollywood his destination. He feels Tollywood is one of the most disciplined and vibrant entertainment segment in the world. Here is a quick catch up on him.
Sekhar Suyra hails from a village near Palakollu in West Godavari Dist. He completed his engineering from Bangalore. He comes from a modest agricultural family. He says, 'My parents gave me very good education and all anticipated that I would become an engineer. Somehow, I had passion for films from my childhood. And frankly, I might have disappointed them by getting into the film side. In this aspect I should thank Pulagam Chinnarayana (noted PRO, journalist), my brother-in-law, for his support of me entering into this film world.'.
Sekhar Surya first joined Varma Corporation and later moved to work with RK for Utopia Entertainments. Talking about RK, he says, 'I feel at home with him. There is a lot of freedom. I worked with him for Angrez and Hyderabad Nawabs.'
At present, Sekhar Surya is working on a script for a Telugu film. His first film FM - Fun aur Masti - comes under a new category of films - Hyderabadi Lingo. He is enjoying the response from the locals here in the city. 'Locals say that they like the film immensely.' So why this genre of film? Why not make a regular commercial flick? Sekhar Surya explains with a logic - 'The entire film revolves around one character Gullu Bhai. There is no way we could treat this tappori type in regular commercial format. The script depends heavily on the screenplay and the characters.'
His acquaintance with the lingo is very little. What did he go through for handling the Hyderabadi lingo? He depended on the star cast for it. 'Aziz, RK, Gullu and several other people in the old city helped me through it. In fact, the film was wrapped up in 40 days.'
What does he feel about making a film in Tollywood? He responds, 'I am learning by watching. I am inspired by several films. But lately the trend is that the story is spun around one hero character. Naturally that goes over dramatic or very unnatural.
A producer starts searching for a script, as soon as he gets the dates of the hero. That way, there is lot of hurry and script gets compromised. This should change.'.
When asked about his priorities, he responds, 'Making profits for the producer is my goal but at the same time, I want to give super entertainment to the audience. Director is the captain of the ship and a producer should have faith in him. A director should enjoy freedom so that he can open up to creative and imaginative thoughts'.
Sekhar Surya is working on his script which will go to the sets shortly. We thank Sekhar Surya for sharing his opinions with us and we wish him all the best with his future endeavors.
