Abhimanyu - Review
Story Abhimanyu (Kalyanram), a student, lives with his mother Janaki (Suhasini) who is physically handicapped.
Saira Bhanu (Spandana) is the only daughter of Jaleel Khan (Pawan Malhotra) who hails from Kadapa. Abhimanyu and Saira Bhanu fall in love. Knowing this, Jaleel Khan brings his daughter back to his native. Saira realizes that Abhimanyu is related to her. How exactly is he related and how
they get married are narrated very well on the screen.
Analysis The plot is old wine. Abhimanyu is definitely a new bottle. Handling of the subject is done very well.
The takings and narration are very good. The focus from the main line is never lost and never a chance for extra tracks of vulgarity or comedy.
Due to this, the film is refreshing. The casting is also apt. Shavukar Janaki and Pawan Malhotra characters are portrayed very well. Also,
scenes between Telengana Shakuntala, Suhasini and Kalyanram are heart touching. Mainly, Telengana Shakuntala saying Nuvvu naa kadupuna puttaledhani manta undhi to Kalyanram tunes good sentimental strings. Kalyanram did very well in this film. There is one dialogue by Kalyanram implicitly
referring to his vamsam, Nenu ninnu kottananuko, kottina tharuvatha chastav. Adhe maa nannani thaluchukuni kodithe ventane chastavu.
Adhe maa tatani thaluchukunte koote lopule chasthavu. Mimicry by Venu Madhav is excellent. He also gives an interesting definition for God:
Gandhi nunchi Godsey varaku, Ordinary nunchi officials varaku - demand lo unnavade God. The movie interrelates three religions - Hindu, Christian
and Muslim. However, never once was a word raised about any of the three. This factor is kept under wraps and love overtakes all the religions
in the plot. Pawan Malhotra changing to the wise sayings of Shavukaru Janaki which was very inspring. This makes the climax - the heart of the movie.
Artists
Kalyan ram: This movie is tailor made for Kalyanram. One wishes that this would be launch pad. He excelled in all the departments.
His dialogue delivery is good. His performance in few emotional scenes is excellent and worth applauds. There is a noticable resemblance in Kalyanram
with his uncle Balakrishna. This film promises that Kalyanram is yet another Nandamuri heir who has lot of potential and to continue at boxoffice for
long time.
Spandana: she aptly suited the role of a Muslim girl. Her character is two shaded - as an obedient daughter and also can go to any extent for love.
She looked good and dished out a nice performance.
Suhasini, as a physically handicapped women, did her role with ease. Emotional scenes between Suhasini and Kalyanram are a treat.
Telangan Shakuntala excelled in her role.
Pawan Malhotra did a fine job.
Shavukaru Janaki's performance, as the grand mother of heroine,
is good. Her performance in the climax is extraordinary.
Venu Madhav, as the buddy of hero, has
produced some good comedy which was timely. His mimicry is worth mention.
Music
Mani Sharma's music is average. This could be one minus for the film in the long run. There are only 2 good songs worth mention. Background is
good.
Direction
Mallikarjun (Malli) directed this film. This is his first venture. Earlier he worked with Puri Jaganath as an assitant director.
Abhimanyu, not even for a moment, looked like a venture directed by a debutante. Narration is good. The film has all the ingredients composed
together well. He has got good sense of timing emotional scenes and comedy. This becomes a big plus in the movie. And also, even though three
different religions were involved in the plot, the religion factor is kept under the shade of love. This is another appreciable element.
