Ashok - Review
There is lot of expectation around the film Ashok starring NTR, Sameera Reddy. It is because of the electrifying combination of NTR and director Surender Reddy. The expectations are met mostly, though not completely. Surender Reddy proved his excellency in technical aspects and slick narration with Atanokkade. In Ashok, some of it is repeated. A few scenes are sure to rock. The best of the film are the action episodes. Songs are done pretty good too. Overall, this film is surely to entertain the fans.
Story of the film is okay though the director and the story writer (Vakkantham Vamsi) tried to show it in a different way. Ashok (NTR) is always chided by his father (Prakash Raj) for his aggressive behavior. He is loved very much by his sister and mother (Sudha). On one occassion, Ashok is kicked out of his house for being not responsible and aggressive. He shares a place with his friends Rajeev (Rajeev Kanakala) and Chandu (Satyam Rajesh). He starts a mechanic shed. Meanwhile, as the lady with the classical dance background - Anjali (Sameera Reddy) - is introduced, Ashok promptly falls in love with her. What is the whole point of the hero being aggressive without the villain being so strong? So there comes KK (Sonu Sood) who is in love with Anjali. He realizes that she is in love with Ashok and also knows the potential of Ashok. So he plans to eliminate Ashok. But the hero is invincible. Finally, Ashok is moved to a different location in the pretext of job. (Need it be said that it is the plan of the bad guys). After getting a bit suspicious, Ashok returns only to find his dear friend Rajeev dead. Ashok goes on a rampage. Why is Ashok suspicious? Who killed Rajeev? Why did he go on rampage? What happened to Anjali? Watch the film on silver screen to realize the plot.
Surender used his technique of back and forth screenplay in Ashok too. (It is one of the fresh points in Atanokkade). All the action part in the film is excellent. Songs are pictured very good though the placement could have been better. Ekantham gaa unna song is the best and is done very well.
Ashok kicks off with an excellent start. First fight in the film is composed excellent and it takes the expectations to the peak. The rest of the film just could not continue that range of tempo. However, the director made sure that there are some good number of scenes that stand to the range such as the first fight, villain entrance, Ashok warning KK's mother on road (fans will go crazy in this scene), Sumo and auto blasts in a fight, hospital scene where Rajeev dies, pre-climax scenes with Prakash Raja, a kid making fun of the villains by pulling his pants down. The above mentioned scenes are surely to rock the theater. At the same time, there are a few other key scenes that fails to prove the point.
Few other things that should been taken care are - KK is introduced with so much of hype and then his character just turns regular villain. There is inconsistency in his characterization. Also, comedy part is very low in the film. Climax could have been better.
Overall, Surender Reddy did justice to the film. His slick screenplay and details to technical aspects is impressive and that will override drawbacks in the film. Editing by Gautam Raju is very good. Senthil's camera work is a big asset to the film. Super35 format that is used to capture the film is pretty clear in the rain fights. It shows the effect.
Music and re-recording by Manisharma is excellent and undoubtedly the backbone. Oka Chinni Navve, Yekantham, MumtazMahal, Jabili songs are very good. Sets done for the songs are excellent too. Art director Ashok deserves a pat. This also proves the high production values. Action sequences by Stunt Siva are excellent. Dialogs by Marudhuri
Raja are okay. However, punch dialogs are lacking.
Performance wise, this is an usual role for NTR. He lived in it. Dances, fights in this movie need a special mention. He rocked. Sameera Reddy is okay in her role. Though she did dances very well, she has less scope with performance. Sonu Sood is definitely to get appreciation from all cornors for his performance. Prakash Raj, Rajeev Kanakala, Raghu Babu, Sudha, Jeeva did their roles to content.
Ashok is a good film for NTR compared to his previous films. It is a definite treat for his fans. Some of the scenes are bound to get great response from the crowds. And that might cover for the rest.
