Chandramukhi - Review
Chandramukhi is the film for Rajani Kanth after Baba. Baba released a few years ago. Though this film might not satisfy the jive of Rajani's fans,
the film is not routine.
This is a different film for Rajani Kanth.
The film is released on the same day in Telugu and Tamil.
Chandramukhi is based on a recent Kannada hit Aptamitra starring Vishnuvardhan. P.Vasu directed that film too. The story of the film even dates back to
few decades. Initially the film was made in Malayalam and then the same film is made into Telugu too.
Probably the makers felt that the story is still refreshing even after many makings.
Eswar (Rajani Kanth) is the cousin of Kailash (Prabhu). Kailash and Ganga (Jyothika) are happily married. Kailash bags a tender for 200 crores and
buys a palace to move in with his wife. They come to know that the palace is haunted. Undeterred by these stories about the house, the couple go ahead and buy
the mansion. Eswar is a world famous psychiatrist. He encourages Kailash to go for the palace. However, he decides to go and evaluate the place for himself.
He gets the first hand experience of the strange happenings at the mansion. From his research, he finds out that the palace was once owned by a Raja
who forced one Chandramukhi as a court dancer. Chandramukhi is already in love with one Gunasekharudu. Coming to know of this, Raja gets both of them killed.
It is the ghost of Chandramukhi that haunts the mansion. There is also a tantrik who comes to pull the ghost out of the mansion. To know on - what the
ghost did to Kailash & Ganga, what did they do to release it, how did Eswar handle it and who finally got rid of the ghost: Eswar or Tantrik - watch it on silver screen.
P.Vasu did a great job in maintaining the suspense until the end. P.Vasu handled screenplay and direction for this film. The same director earlier directed
blockbuster Mannan (Telugu Gharanamogudu) with Rajani Kanth.
Though he could not really stand up to the expectations with story and screenplay, he proved his skills
in maintaining the suspence and elevating Rajani Kanth. The way he explains on how Rajani Kanth comes to know of this 150 year old story is revealed very well
in the climax.
The director left few knots untied and leaves the audience in confusion. "Why did the ghost not harm Eswar or Tantrik? What happened to the big snake
that is shown in the room?
Why is the buildup given for Akhilandeswari character when there is no absolute importance for the character?".
Coming to the other technical points of the film, music is inadequate.
For suspense films like Chandramukhi, hair raising music is absolutely necessary.
Though, for most part of the film Vidyasagar was successful in delivering it, the overall film falls short of the impulsive music.
Camera by Sekhar Joseph is OK. Editing by Suresh Ars is content. There are two fights added to prove the might of the protagonist. They are composed in
excellent manner by Dalapati Suresh.
In regards to performance by the cast: Rajani Kanth lived up to the character in his own style. He entertains the viewers by elevating the character
in his own styles and mannerisms. He displayed his mark in the entire film. Jyothika needs a special mention for the performance. Especially as
the movie walks toward the climax, her performance is amazing. The other cast Nayana Tara, Nazar, Prabhu, KR Vijaya did their roles well. Vadivelu
brings in good comedy as Basavayya. Big assest for his role is dubbing provided by Brahmanandam.
The director is successful in maintaining the grip through out the entire film. The flow comes in a smooth stream. There are few boring moments in both
halves. But at the same time the suspence point grips the rest of the film. Second half paces up very well. The run gets interesting as the film
progresses towards the climax.
This is a different film for Rajani Kanth. The run of the film depends on how the fans of Rajani would receive it.
