Subash Chandra Bose - Review
Subash Chandrabose is semi-historic film. 60% of the film is narrated in the 1940s during the British tenure in India and the rest of the film is in modern times. Vaijayanthi Films, a reputed banner for making big and successful films, produced this film in the direction of
K.Raghavendra Rao. Venkatesh played the title role of Subash Chandrabose. The film travels in time based on his character.
Ashok (Venkatesh) and his batch get jobs in TV 24 as reporters. Reputed as a freedom fighter, Venkata Ratnam (Prakash Raj) establishes a new political party - Santisena. Ashok is asked to cover that program. While he is there to cover the program, some strange memories start haunting him. Thats where the director takes us into the flash back. Ashok realizes that this is his rebirth and in his previous birth he is known as Chandram. Chandram fights against the British from the inspiration he derives from Subash Chandrabose. Since he is an ardent follower of Bose, his friends start referring to him
as Subash "Chandra" Bose. Also he has Chandram in his name to be convenietly named so.
So why did Subash Chandra Bose alias Chandram come back again in the form of Ashok? What is the job undone for Chandra Bose that he has to come back as Ashok? Watch it on the silver screen to get the plot.
The story really has nothing to do with Subash Chandra Bose, for those who thought it is about Subash Chandra Bose.
But rather it is about a guy who is inspired by Bose and fights against the British.
Venkatesh delivered a good performace in both the roles - Ashok and Chandram. Fans can watch this film for his performance.
Since the film is semi-historic, British palace sets and village sets are erected for the film. And the work needs an applaud. Art director Ashok did a fantastic job with the sets. Not just them! Even the sets in the songs are done with a great taste. Vaijayanthi production values reflect in the sets itself. Talking about the sets for the songs, K.Raghavendra Rao has an exquisite taste in brining out songs. And this film proves it yet again. The songs stand as a highlight for the film. Visualization of the songs is superb.
Brand mark of Raghavendra Rao, with no regards to seasons, the songs have all different kinds of fruits in the background. Manisharma's composition of the songs and the background score stand as an asset. K.Raghavendra Rao used such good music to give a treat of the songs. Mee Intlo Amma Nanna, Ja Ja Jiri, Neredu Pallu songs are very good. And similary the patriotic song came out very good. Special effects are used
in Abra Kadabra song and graphics are done affectively.
Though the songs are the highlight of the film, they form the obstacles for the pace. When the film is goes into a serious mode, a song comes in.
Itseems that the placement of the songs could have been better.
The story, based on the plot, could not offer much twists. Some surprise elements are integrated to make it interesting. However, the film runs
quite predictable for most part. It feels like routine. The dialogues penned by Parachuri Bros are not that effective. Being a patriotic film, to some extent, there is lot of scope for effective dialogues. But the film lacks them. Except for couple of places, the dialogues fail to impress.
Photography by Bhoopathi is pretty good.
Especially he did a good job in the flashback episodes and songs. Stunts composed by Vijayan are thrilling and editing by Kotagiri is content.
Coming to the analysis on the film: First part has some good comedy running along. Film starts off in a good pace. However, some scenes seem very cinematic and artificial in the first half. Venkatesh snatches the mike sets and runs away with them since they disturb the students and then a lecture follows it. Such scenes are just an example of filling up the blank sheet but not really necessary. Geneelia role comes in the first half. She looked very good and attracts with her expressive eyes. She is just restricted to songs.
Second half runs in a total patriotic feel with Chandram fighting against British. This episode in the film is a big plus. Graphics are used effectively here also. Gandhiji's character is created by graphics. Parachuri Venkateswara Rao garlands Gandhiji and these scenes show the advancement of our graphics. But what is the significance of Parachuri's character? There is nothing much that the character contributed to the story. Also, the patriotic feel is missed when the execution turns routine cinematically. This is felt in the scenes where Chandram releases the Governor, who is held as a hostage by Chandram, to rescue his mother.
Though some scenes remind you of Lagan - like Diana, daughter of the British Governor, helping Chandram in his fight and Swarajyam (Shriya) getting jealous about it, well!, it is the timeframe (both films have British ruling) that the film is set in and hence drawing comparision is not justified. Shriya has got better scope than Geneelia in the film. But again, Shriya's role has nothing to offer more than the songs.
From the second half the film paces towards the climax with a gathered temp that went missing somewhere towards the end of first half. But the climax again turns routine. K.Raghavendra Rao made a good mark in the songs but fails to keep up the same expectation in terms of the film.
In other characters: Prakashraj played the role of Chandram's friend and he did it very good. Sunil, Manik as friends of Ashok and Venu Madav, Ali as friends of Chandram did their roles to content. Venu Madhav is impressive as Radio. Thanikella Bharani (as Chandram's father) and Parachuri Venkateswara Rao did their roles within the scope. Tom Alter and Gulshan Grover played British rulers and are routine. Kota, Brahmanandam, Babu Mohan played the sub-ordinates of British rules but didnot have much scope.
Overall, the film has got good sets, well choreographed songs, well composed music, technically good cinematography, graphics and stunts.
But the film also has its balance of not so effective dialogues, a hazy screenplay & direction.
