Sye - Review
This movie can actually be renamed as Lagaan - Part 2. While Lagaan was based on Cricket, Sye is centered on Rugby.
The story revolves around a college in Hyderabad where there are two cliques of students who are in constant conflict
with each other. One of them is the science group and the other is the arts. The leader of the science group, Prudvi (Nitin)
is the college principal's (Thanikella Bharani) son. And the art's group leader is Sasank (Sasank). Though these two groups
fight with each other on a regular basis, they adore their college Principal and Rugby Coach Raffi (Raajeev Kanakaala).
The only other thing all of them love is Rugby. Rugby is used as a means to prove their dominancy. The movie twist comes
in the form of the local dada, Bikshu Yadav (Pradeep Singh Rawat). He comes with a court order to vacate the college saying
that he bought the college land.
In spite of the fact that Prudvi and Sasank and their troupes do not go along with each other, they come together and decide
to save the college from Yadav. According to their plan, Prudvi and group steal the documents from Yadav. Unfortunately, Sasank falls in
the hands of the goons and gets trashed by Yadav. In the end, Yadav challenges Prudvi and team to play a Rugby game with them and
that the winner will get the college. The remaining part of the movie includes the game and how the hero team wins.
Lagaan is repeated with minor modifications. But, the fact that Cricket is a very popular game in our
country eased Lagaan to captivate the audience. But, since a major percentage of the audience are not very familiar with
Rugby, presenting it is a tougher task. Raja Mouli took care of this rather successfully by making it a point to
inform the viewer some basics of the game. Nice screenplay helped the movie proceed without loosing grip. The fights
between the two groups and the love story between Prudvi and Indu (Jeneeliya) were picturized balancedly.
While all the songs in the movie are good, placement of the songs is not the best. Like many of the recent movies, situations
were created to act as placeholders for the songs rather than songs being part of the situation. Pop tunes including Shaggy's
tunes and the "We will rock you" music bits were used extensively. While the song, Gangaa a.c., is catchy, 'Nalla Nallani Pilla'
is the best of the lot. Its picturization was also very well made. 'Gootulovundi bellam mukku' has lots of double meaning words.
M Ratnam dialogues are very good. In particular, dialogues by Rajeev Kanakaala in the climax got even the audience moved.
Cameraman Senthil did a splendid job. Every scene in the movie is shown as a painting. Thanks to the producer who spared
no expense, the movie is filled with extravagence. Editing by Kotagiri Venkateswara is ok.
Suresh Bujji gets the credit for very impressive design of the titles.
Comedy is well handled. VenuMadhav episode and the scenes between Indu and Prudvi are hilarious.
Nitin's action is very impressive. Looks like he gave special attention to his dances. He should take more care of the
dubbing though. Jeneelia suited very aptly for the role. Her action is noteworthy. Pradeep Singh Rawat fit well as Bikshu Yadav
Rajeev Kanakaala, Thanikella Bharani and VenuMadhav acted nicely as per their roles.
Though revolving around not-so-familiar Rugby, Director's Raja Mouli made this quite entertaining. The movie starts off
great and the second half is handled well, but the first half of the film seems a little dragged. We have yet to see if the movie will be liked by all sects.
Though it opened with good collections, it's still a guesswork as to how the mass will accept this movie.
